We are honored to introduce Kareem Weaver, a gripping speaker hailing from Oakland, CA NAACP. He has seen firsthand the devastating effects of fluctuating fads in literacy instruction and can speak to the urgency of grounding teachers in evidence-based practices. Carissa Berliner, an NYC DOE Universal Literacy coach has also been grappling with the frustrations of effecting change within our schools, in spite of promising new teaching techniques and training. Together with LAC’s Naomi Peña as host, we hope the discussion will illuminate the dire need for education leaders, teachers, and activists from every corner of this City to put aside differences and unite behind the push to bring fundamental change to literacy practice within the New York City public school system. 

 

We believe it is nothing less than the most urgent Civil Rights issue of our day.
